The history of Turkey is centuries old
From its ancient origins to its modern-day incarnation as a secular republic, Turkey has been at the crossroads of many civilizations and cultures. Here's a brief overview of some key periods in Turkey's history:
Ancient Anatolia: The region that is now Turkey has been inhabited since ancient times by various civilizations, including the Hittites, Phrygians, Lydians, and Persians.
Classical Period: Anatolia was conquered by Alexander the Great in the 4th century BCE, and after his death, it became part of the Seleucid Empire. Later, it was ruled by the Romans and then the Byzantines.
Seljuk Empire: In the 11th century, Turkic tribes from Central Asia, known as the Seljuks, began migrating into Anatolia. They defeated the Byzantines at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071 and established the Seljuk Empire, which would eventually evolve into the Ottoman Empire.
Ottoman Empire: The Ottoman Empire was founded in the late 13th century by Osman I and lasted until the early 20th century. At its height, it was one of the most powerful empires in the world, controlling vast territories in Europe, Asia, and Africa. The Ottoman Empire was known for its cultural and architectural achievements, as well as its religious tolerance.
Decline and Fall of the Ottoman Empire: By the 19th century, the Ottoman Empire began to decline, facing challenges from internal strife, European imperialism, and nationalist movements within its territories.
